2005 Advances in Veterinary Medicine Day

Poster Winners

Dr. Carmen Colitz from the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences planned and chaired this year''s Advances in Veterinary Medicine Day on April 14, 2005. This event is designed to highlight research and scholarship being performed by College faculty and students. It is also a way for the College community to come together and learn about the exciting research being carried out by colleagues. A record 98 posters were displayed in Sisson Hall and in the Hummel Grand Lounge in the Veterinary Medicine Academic Building. Graduate and veterinary student poster presentations were evaluated by 26 faculty judges.

The keynote address "Terror at Your Plate" was given by Michael J. Blackwell, DVM, MPH. Dr. Blackwell is the Dean of The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and former Assistant Surgeon General (Rear Admiral) of the US Public Health Service.

Eleven $600 travel awards were awarded to the following students to be used to support their travel to national and international scientific meetings to present their research.

Immunology and Infectious Diseases

  • Thomas Carsillo, for his poster "HSP72 – a host determinant of measles virus neurovirulence"
  • Hajima Hiraragi, for his poster "Critical requirement of human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 mitochondria localizing protein P-13II for viral infectivity in vivo"

Molecular and Cellular Biology

  • Heather Chandler, for her poster "The role of tetracyclines in healing of canine refractory corneal ulcers"
  • Shuiming Qian, for his/her poster "RNA helicase A is necessary for translation of HIV-1 unspliced RNA"
  • Terah Robbin, for her poster "The effect of phosphoylated AKT inhibition on posterior capsular opacification in the canine lens"
  • Yingjie Zhang, for her poster "CCAAT/Enhancer binding proteinδ (C/EBPδ) is regulated by specific transcription factors, co-activators, C-MYC de-repression and chromatin remodeling"

Structure/Function

  • Antonio Pozzi, for his poster "In vitro effect of meniscal release on load transmission and stability in stifles with and without tibial plateau leveling osteotomy"

Clinical Research

  • Jeannette Messer, for her poster "Universal bacterial PCR for diagnosis of canine bacterial meningoencephalitis"
  • Deanna Schaefer, for her poster "Circulating nucleic acids as a biomarker for dogs with cancer"

Veterinary Students

  • Andrew Bowman, for his poster "Prevelance of yersinia enterocolitica in different phases of production on swine farms"
  • Einav Elitsur, for her poster "Pathophysiology of sarcocystis neurona in the horse model"
  • Lisa Gooding, for her poster "Methylation of the E-cadherin tumor suppressor gene in canine mammary cancer"
