Building Community Partnerships
The College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University has a number of service outreach and engagement arrangements:
- Our partnership with the Capital Area Humane Society includes senior clinical rotations, and the shelter funds an Ohio State clinician to provide primary care services to its animals.
- The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine's partnership with the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (DRC) includes assistance in the planning of a slaughter plant, livestock and farm management, and environmental issues. The college also provides veterinary care for the DRC's canine training program.
- The college's Honoring the Bond program continues to offer family advocate services and educational resources for clients of the Veterinary Hospital, as well as a Companion Animal Listening Line for non-medical support and grief education information.
- Other outreach initiatives included partnerships with the Columbus Zoo and the Wilds, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, the Cleveland Animal League, the Capital Area Humane Society, the Racing Commission, AKC, Standardbred Association, and Ohio Cattlemen.
- Students and faculty from the College of Veterinary Medicine provide medical and surgical services at the Franklin County Dog Shelter. Students are educated about the issues surrounding pet overpopulation while meeting some of the animal welfare needs in the community. The class of 2005 treated over 9,900 animals and performed over 1,800 surgeries for homeless animals in Franklin County.
